Social Media Marketing

Social media is your most powerful tool for mini session marketing. Here's how to use it effectively:

Instagram Strategy

Content Types to Post:

Announcement Posts

  • Beautiful cover image
  • Event details in caption
  • Link in bio to booking page
  • Hashtags relevant to your location and theme

Sample/Example Photos

  • Past work from similar sessions
  • Shows the quality clients can expect
  • Include testimonials in caption
  • "This could be you!" energy

Behind-the-Scenes Content

  • Location scouting photos
  • Prop shopping or setup
  • Your excitement and personality
  • Makes it feel accessible and fun

Countdown Posts

  • "3 weeks until Fall Minis!"
  • "5 spots left!"
  • "Sold out in 48 hours!"
  • Creates urgency

Client Feature Posts

  • Repost sneak peeks from past mini sessions
  • Get permission and tag the client
  • Shows social proof (real people love your work)

Stories Strategy:

  • Post event announcement to stories + save to Highlights
  • Share countdown stickers ("Only 2 weeks left!")
  • Poll stickers: "Who's booking Fall Minis?" with Yes/Already Booked options
  • Question stickers: "What questions do you have about mini sessions?"
  • Link sticker directly to booking page (if you have 10k+ followers)
  • Repost client stories who mention their excitement

Hashtag Strategy:

Use a mix of broad and local hashtags:

Broad hashtags:

  • #FallMiniSessions
  • #FamilyPhotographer
  • #MinisessionEvent
  • #FallFamilyPhotos
  • #HolidayCardPhotos

Local hashtags:

  • #PortlandPhotographer (your city)
  • #PDXFamilies (your city abbreviation)
  • #PortlandMoms (your city + audience)
  • #OakGroveParks (your location)

Branded hashtag:

  • #YourBusinessNameMinis (create a branded hashtag clients can use)

Facebook Strategy

Where to Post:

Your Business Page:

  • Event announcement with booking link
  • Updates as spots fill
  • Sample photos
  • Client testimonials

Your Personal Profile:

  • Share from your business page
  • Personal invitation to friends/family
  • More casual, behind-the-scenes content

Local Community Groups:

  • "Moms of [Your City]"
  • "[Your City] Local Events"
  • "[Your City] Buy/Sell/Trade" (if allowed)
  • "Photographers in [Your City]" (to connect with non-competing photographers)
Group Rules

Always check group rules before posting! Some groups don't allow business promotion. If you're not sure, message the admin first.

Facebook Event:

Create a Facebook Event for your mini sessions:

  • Makes it easy for people to invite friends
  • Sends automatic reminders to people who RSVP
  • Shows social proof ("12 people are interested")
  • Centralizes all event info in one place

How to create:

  1. Go to Events on your business page
  2. Create Event
  3. Add cover photo, details, and booking link
  4. Invite your followers
  5. Post updates to the event as slots fill

Boosting Posts (Paid Advertising):

Consider spending $20-50 to "boost" your announcement post:

  • Targets people in your area
  • Reaches people who don't follow you yet
  • Can narrow by demographics (parents, ages 25-45, etc.)
  • Often worth it for filling those last few spots

Email Marketing

Your email list is gold! Past clients already know and trust you.

Segment Your List

Website Marketing

Don't forget your own website!

Add a Banner or Announcement

At the top of your homepage:

  • Eye-catching banner
  • Brief details
  • Clear "Book Now" button

Example banner text:

🍂 Fall Mini Sessions Now Booking! Limited spots available - Book your session today →

Create a Dedicated Landing Page

Some photographers create a full landing page:

  • Event details
  • Sample photos
  • FAQ section
  • Booking form or link
  • Testimonials from past mini session clients

This page serves as:

  • Destination for social media traffic
  • SEO-friendly content (people searching "fall mini sessions Portland")
  • Comprehensive info hub

Blog Post About the Event

Write a blog post announcing the event:

  • "Fall Mini Sessions 2024: Everything You Need to Know"
  • Include all details, what to wear, location info, booking link
  • Helps with SEO
  • Shareable content
  • Can be updated annually

Referral and Word-of-Mouth Marketing

Your best marketing often comes from happy clients spreading the word.

Ask Past Clients to Share

Personal message:

Hi Sarah,

I'm running Fall Mini Sessions next month and would love your help spreading the word!

If you know any families who might be interested, would you mind sharing the booking link with them? I'd be so grateful!

[Booking link]

And if anyone you refer books a session, I'll give you $25 off your next session as a thank you. 💛

Referral Incentive Program

Offer a reward for referrals:

  • $25 off next session for referrer
  • $25 off for person being referred
  • Everyone wins!

How it works:

  1. Create unique referral codes for past clients (SARAH25, MIKE25, etc.)
  2. Track which code was used at booking
  3. Credit both parties after the referred client attends their session

Social Sharing Encouragement

Make it easy for people to share:

Create shareable graphics:

  • Quote the post: "I'm so excited for @yourhandle's Fall Mini Sessions!"
  • Template graphic clients can repost to stories
  • Pre-written caption they can copy/paste

Example shareable story template:

Can't wait for @yourhandle's Fall Mini Sessions! 🍂 If you're local and want beautiful family photos for holiday cards, check out [link]! Only a few spots left!

Creating Urgency

Urgency drives bookings! Here's how to create it ethically:

Limited Capacity

This is real urgency, not fake!

  • "Only 12 spots available"
  • "Limited to one day only"
  • "This location is only perfect for 2 more weeks"

Don't artificially limit if you could easily add more dates/slots. But if 12 sessions is genuinely your max, say so!

Early Bird Pricing

Rewards people who book immediately:

  • First 5 bookings get $25 off
  • Book by September 15th for $225 (regular price $250)
  • Early bird code expires in 48 hours

Why it works: People don't want to miss out on a deal, so they book NOW instead of "thinking about it."

Countdown to Price Increase

  • "Price increases September 15th"
  • "Book by Friday to lock in $250 rate"
  • "After this week, price goes up to $275"

Real example:

⏰ Price increases Friday! Right now mini sessions are $250, but on September 15th the price goes up to $275. Book this week to lock in the lower rate!

Show Spots Filling

Visual urgency:

  • "8 out of 12 spots booked!"
  • "Only 4 morning spots left"
  • "Afternoon sessions sold out, mornings still available"

Why it works: Social proof + scarcity. If others are booking, it must be good. And if spots are disappearing, I need to act now!

Time-Limited Offers

  • "48-hour flash sale - $50 off!"
  • "Weekend only: Book Saturday or Sunday and save"
  • "This code expires Monday at midnight"

Why it works: Clear deadline forces decision-making.

Leveraging Social Proof

People want to see that others have booked and loved the experience.

Testimonials

Where to use them:

  • Social media captions
  • Email announcements
  • Booking page
  • Website landing page

Example:

"Sarah was amazing! The mini session was quick and stress-free, and we got the most beautiful family photos for our holiday cards. Worth every penny!" - Emily R.

Client Photos (with Permission)

Share past mini session results:

  • "This is what you can expect!"
  • "Sarah's family loved their Fall Minis last year"
  • Shows real results from real clients

Always get permission first:

Hi Sarah, I'd love to share one of your mini session photos when I announce this year's Fall Minis. Is that okay with you?

"Fully Booked" Badge

If you sell out, shout it out!

  • "Fall Mini Sessions SOLD OUT in 3 days!"
  • "Thank you to everyone who booked!"
  • "Join the waitlist for next event"

Why it works: Proves demand. Next time you announce, people will remember it sold out and book faster.

If you have a marketing budget, paid ads can fill those last few spots or reach new audiences.

Facebook/Instagram Ads

When to use:

  • Event is 2-3 weeks away and you have open spots
  • You're new to the area and building your client base
  • You want to reach beyond your current followers

Budget:

  • Start with $20-50 for a week-long campaign
  • Target local area (10-20 mile radius)
  • Target demographics (parents, ages 25-50, etc.)

Ad Format:

  • Carousel ad with 3-5 sample photos
  • Clear headline: "Fall Mini Sessions - Only 5 Spots Left!"
  • Strong call-to-action: "Book Your Session Today"
  • Direct link to booking page

Results to expect:

  • Reach: 2,000-5,000 local people
  • Engagement: 50-200 post interactions
  • Bookings: 1-5 new bookings (depending on offer and targeting)

When to use:

  • You're in a competitive market
  • You want to appear when people search "family photographer near me"
  • You have a larger marketing budget ($100-300)

Targeting:

  • Keywords like "fall family photos Portland"
  • "Mini session photographer near me"
  • "Holiday card photographer [your city]"

Landing page:

  • Dedicated landing page on your website
  • Clear booking CTA
  • Mobile-optimized

Common Marketing Mistakes

Mistake 1: Announcing Too Late

Announcing 2 weeks before the event doesn't give people time to plan or save money.

Fix: Announce 6-8 weeks in advance. Give people time to book, pay, and prepare.

Mistake 2: Only Posting Once

You post the announcement once and expect it to sell out. Most people need to see it 3-5 times before booking.

Fix: Post weekly updates with different angles (sample photos, location sneak peeks, urgency updates).

Mistake 3: No Call-to-Action

Your post says "Fall Minis coming soon!" but doesn't say where to book or include a link.

Fix: Every post should have a clear CTA: "Book your spot here: [link]" or "Link in bio!"

Mistake 4: Burying the Booking Link

Booking link is on page 6 of your website, or in an Instagram story that expired 3 days ago.

Fix: Pin the booking link in your Instagram bio. Create a Story Highlight called "Book Minis" that stays visible.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Email

You only post on social media and assume everyone sees it. Algorithm shows your post to ~10% of followers.

Fix: Always email your list! Email has much higher open/engagement rates than social media.

Mistake 6: Generic, Boring Copy

"Fall mini sessions available. Book now." - this doesn't excite anyone.

Fix: Tell a story, show beautiful photos, explain the value, create urgency. Make people WANT to book.

Mistake 7: Not Following Up

Someone comments "Interested!" on your post and you don't reply or message them.

Fix: Reply to every comment and DM interested people with the booking link and details.

Mistake 8: Inconsistent Branding

Every post looks different - different colors, fonts, styles. People don't recognize it's you.

Fix: Create templates in Canva with consistent colors, fonts, and layouts. Your posts should be instantly recognizable.
